Pig Roast...Vegetarians Beware

Was that a party or what?

Barely had talk of last week's exciting road trip to Sherbrooke (remember?) died down then SABRFC was revving it up for another wild weekend. No doubt about it, the pig roast was grand slam worthy. "Best party I've ever been to," some were moved to say. Perhaps, but let us remember that "Best Party" puts it in some rarified company, for example the giant waterskiing parties at the Christie's, the dancing on the bar, waterfall jumping events down at the Lynam's in Montgomery (rumor has it that Bill fixed the hot tub!), and the rooftop party at Jazz's.

How fun was it? First let's get this straight, six kegs wasn't enough so Aaron gets a free poker buy-in at poker this Wednesday. In Stone's defense however, he did have the foresight to store 8 cases of Carlsberg in the basement, all of it sucked dry well before sunrise.

The pig was cooked to perfectly as were the plump and juicy chickens and the super tender turkey, boiled to perfection in the deep fryer. Jesse M. is given full credit for setting up the slip and slide by knocking over the pot of oil later in the evening....note to Bryce, maybe oil will work better next time.

Bryce really pumped it up however for his slip n’ slide. It is believed that the 3x8 piece of plastic was of "professional" slipping and sliding quality. Perhaps the lack of imagination in the slip and slide construction could be explained by his attempts to grow a decent mustache. In the end the slide was without the "bells and whistles" we would expect from a McGill engineering grad, but Bryce did manage to grow a decent mustache, or color one in anyway (see photo for the secret to B-rice's ‘stache).

But all this is to divert attention away from the terrific day that began at 5 am with Hollywood picking the delicious cream and peaches corn from Willie Lang's field (apparently the best corn in Ontario). Later, while the pig was turning slowly, the women's teams defeated their Town counterparts 24-0 and 39-36. The first team's game was highly entertaining while the second team showed great commitment.

The reserves opened the floodgates early and won pulling away. The firsts were down 7-0 before the game was minutes old and on the subsequent kick off, came close to being scored on again, however, soon they had scored two spectacular tries on the wing to pull ahead for good. The Town came back late in the game with two quick tries. Still after an enjoyable afternoon of rugby, players and friends made their way to Milligan’s to enjoy a party organized by Sommer, Mona, Steph, Milligan and Aaron. It was a wonderful evening that can be best only explained in pictures.

Still, it would be wrong not to mention the terrific exhibition put on by the women's rookies. Although I don't condone these kinds of initiations, it was highly entertaining and very uplifting for Cundall and Frank.

There was dancing and singing and general revelry ‘til the sun rose in the eastern sky. It was all in honor of celebrating summer and the close bonds that tie us together as friends and teammates. Although mention was made of Dudley being selected resident of the year, the party had no goal other then to enjoy a warm July evening after a day of outdoor fun and exercise.

As if to punctuate these feelings, at midnight Palmer, Scotland, Guiler and Dean set off a terrific display of fireworks. There were also some reassuring developments that should encourage further such events. Maitland passed out by the fire, indicating that fatherhood has not changed him too much and no one had to be hit over the head with a shoe.

To our knowledge everyone got home safely and Milligan's was cleaned up by an industrious, if hungover, crew. Many camped and enjoyed a breakfast of bagels and cream cheese before leaving. Newer members who have not experienced this kind of event seemed keen to revitalize the "Grand Slam" and many offered their homes and cottages. Baker in the Laurentians, Old School in Mansonville (do I hear banjo music?) and others, have already stepped forward. This reporter says bring it on!

Next week the women play their last regular season games and it is hoped the idle men's teams will support them in the full. Their may also be a 3rd team match on Wednesday so stay posted and try to make it out to the tuesday and thursday nite atms where pictures and stories from last weekend will be rehashed.

The fireside singing, the bbq, even the farmhouse location was reminiscent of the stories in SWEEP (available at 23 st.pierre). Could it be some of these stories might also have been true? In any case, one thing is certain. More good times are guaranteed and to quote one B. Hearns, "My best idea yet, joining this club." We say, it's only just beginning, so spread the word.

So was it the "Best Party Ever"? Let's just say it was definitely the best party of the summer. But remember, the summer isn't over yet!
